A late night scroll...

So last night I went to a writer's group that was having their first meeting. There was supposed to be a large snowfall so it ended up being just me and the host. We chatted and I got a lot of one-on-one attention with my first fiction piece I am looking to submit.

Afterwards we were chatting about writer's block and how I was feeling a bit insecure about what I am writing about...yadda yadda...blah blah blah... teeheehee.

I spoke about this one piece in particular called Hai Hai (Thank You --- Cree) that I was quite proud of and wanted to get published somewhere. She asked if she could read it and I happened to have some copies. I explained that I had submitted it to The Malahat Review, a UVIC journal, for the 2019 Open Season Awards, and hadn't heard back anything yet.

We finished our chat and I drove very slowly home in the snowfall, but I was so happy I went to talk writing.

Well...it was late by the time I begun my nightly scroll on FB...

I saw The Malahat Review had posted the finalists for the Open Season Awards, but I hadn't received any email, and I saw the first few names so assumed I didn't make it and scrolled on a little further.

I was going to turn it off when I remembered I better go and see who did make the cut so I could LIKE the post and see the finalists in the 3 categories (we're all in this together!)

I hit the picture and the next name on the list was MINE! I couldn't believe it at first, so I turned on my light (NO idea why...like the light was going to help me see my screen better??) then I looked at it again. There I was under the heading creative nonfiction: Sita-Rani MacMillan, Hai Hai (Thank You --- Cree).

<Woah>

My body reacted and I squealed with delight and started jumping around.

Ahhh...what a great feeling to be one of the 7 finalists in my category.

I am just so excited to make it to the shortlist.

The Malahat Review has been the first place I submitted my writing to as an adult.

Now let's see what happens...

Winners announced Jan 29
